Abstract

Hocus and Lotus («H&L») is a didactic programme for teaching new languages to children aged between 4 and 10. This study analyses the differences in the programme application by teachers from 10 ikastolas (Basque schools) located in the provinces of Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya. Programme application is mainly studied in two dimensions: one, the teacher's conscious didactic actuation; this refers to handling the different classic didactic elements, (such as the type of activities carried out, the frequency and the duration, sequencing, group organisation, and the degree of request difficulty) and two, the spontaneous interpersonal communicative behaviour (meaning sharing out turns to speak, focussing their gaze, tone of voice and gestures). Furthermore, it attempts to investigate the thinking of these teachers and their possible relationship with the different trends which have been observed. It also checks that these differences in programme application are related to the learning acquired by the students.
