Abstract

This article gives some of the results from the investigation into Domestic Violence in relationships among adolescents and young people in Bilbao that was carried out during 2008 with funding from the Bilbao City Council Area for Equality and Cooperation. The aim of the research was to find out the beliefs, attitudes and practices that Bilbao's adolescent students and young people express when they talk about being in a couple and domestic violence, as well as the links that they establish between this type of violence and their emotional relationships past, present or future. The article looks in greater depth at gender stereotypes —associated to determined models of masculinity and femininity— that are deeply rooted among young people and adolescents, defining their representations and behaviour guidelines in the field of emotional-sexual relationships and in the virtual changes that are occurring in certain socialisation agencies relating to transmitting these models.
