Abstract

In an Information Society, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the competence to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. In this way, citizens become prepared for lifelong learning, because they can always find the information needed for any task or decision at hand. This study was intended to understand the role of the teacher and the university in the development of university students' information literacy. The study was carried out at Mondragon University (Basque Country) with students of the Degree in Audiovisual Communication and their teachers. Data was collected through five different focus groups. Findings suggest that teachers have difficulties to understand their role in helping students developing information competencies. Students think the role of the teacher is important in guiding them to become information literate.
