Abstract

Based on the results of a research project with a sectional-descriptive character on the socio-demographic and educational aspects of the journalists exercising the profession in the Eighth Region of Chile, this article proposes a methodological design for detecting professional profiles through the areas of work and competence in which these journalists are involved. As its basic aim, the article proposes the formation of a referent for researching the diversification of the areas of work for the professionals of the social sciences –answerable in different contexts– with the aim of contributing to the feedback mechanisms included in the academic training in these disciplines. Based on its findings, the study reflects on and defines the new organization of the journalistic profession according to areas of competence, revealing the high percentage of employment generated by areas other than the mass media.
