Abstract

This article reviews the offer of contents that is broadcast on 16 television channels of eight Latin American countries (two for each nation) with the aim of determining the balance of their geographical origin, and of identifying the types of genre and the origin of the programs that are broadcast at prime viewing time. Based on a technique of contents analysis focused on one week of programming of the 16 Latin American television channels, the study concludes that in every case local production is higher than imported material and that there is a significant presence on the Latin American televisions of a substantial proportion of programs produced by the countries of the region, displacing the participation of contents originating in the USA. Unlike what happened in the 1980s, the participation of North American products today basically consists of films and cartoons, in such a way that even at prime viewing times there is a predominance of local and regional programs.
