Abstract

This text is a team translation by Ana Doldan, Julia Donley, Harol Gonzalez Duque, Denis Merklen and Maïwenn Raoul of Roberto DaMatta's work entitled "Espaço. Casa, rua e outro mundo: o caso do Brasil" and published in the book by the Rocco Publishing House of Rio de Janeiro, in 1997. The text proposes an analysis of Brazilian society based on three spaces: "the house," "the street" and "the other world". The mobilization of references to different social groups and archives on nineteenth-century Brazilian society addresses the complex relationship of contrast and opposition between the social construction of space and time. The analysis of the differences and porosities between these spaces not only imply specific discourses, ethics and social practices, but also constitute a complex web of complementarities that through social rituals can constitute a new ethic on which the different spaces could be articulated and included.
