Abstract

In this article, the authors reflect on the classic works of children's and youth literature, on their components and defining features, as well as on their origin, both in the case of those consid- ered universal, and those that belong to the Basque literary tradition. Likewise, they weigh the losses and gains that come with some adaptations that have been made of these classics, sometimes with di- dactic purposes. On the other hand, the authors defend the need to continue teaching these classics in the current school context, on the basis that these works provide, on the one hand, common literary ref- erences whose intergenerational transmission is fundamental for the continuity of a community, and, on the other, tools and footholds that allow children and young people to advance in their personal de- velopment throughout their lives and in their understanding of the human condition.
