Abstract

The Eskola Txikiak are a type of school with unique characteristics within the Basque education
system, but with the same educational demands as other schools. The leadership of the management
team is necessary to cope with current and future educational demands, and approaches such as transformational
are positioned as preferred in these processes of educational improvement. The aim of this study is to
find out about the leadership style of the management team at Eskola Txikiak Bizkaia, and to assess whether
gender, postgraduate studies or years of experience in the post have any influence. The results show that the
management team perceives itself as transformational as the predominant style, followed closely and correlated
directly and strongly by transactional. Likewise, passive leadership is not present, and correlates negatively
but weakly with the other two styles. With respect to gender, training and experience in the position,
no differences were found between groups. In the absence of related factors such as these, the findings allow
us to reflect on some of the characteristics of rural schools (organization, size, social relations, etc.) that
may influence the leadership style of the management team.
