Abstract

This paper analyses the historical background of the different answers offered to deaf people by the education system. Though in the last century the educational response has been based on the Special Education, this has not been like that in the previous centuries. The historical evolution of the education models can be understood as the conflict between those opposing the sign language and those in favour. We will identify the clinical-therapeutic perspective on the one hand, that is, the dominant perspective in recent history, which has actually been used as a means to exclude deaf people's identity in the education system. On the other hand, we will analyse the socio-anthropological perspective, an emergent view in the new educational response, based in the recognition of the deaf community as a linguistic and cultural community. Finally, this paper further develops the latter, elaborating on new reflections upon the educational answer and backing what we call a common bilingual-bicultural project.
