“Una donna accorta e capace di amministrare i pubblici affari”: note al ritratto di Pythodoris nella Geografia di Strabone (12.3.29 c 556)

L’articolo si propone di analizzare la figura di Pythodoris, regina del Ponto, alla luce del ritratto offertone da Strabone nella Geografia (12.3.29 C 556), collocandola all’interno della più ampia rete di alleanze dinastiche e strategie imperiali messe in atto da Roma tra il I secolo a.C. e il I secolo d.C. Attraverso il confronto tra la testimonianza di Strabone e altre fonti letterarie, epigrafiche e numismatiche, si evidenzia il ruolo attivo della regina nel garantire la stabilità politica della regione anatolica e del Mar Nero, in un periodo caratterizzato da tensioni fra le dinastie locali e il potere romano. Il contributo mette in risalto la capacità di Pythodoris di inserirsi nella dialettica tra potere locale e controllo imperiale, sviluppando un’efficace politica matrimoniale e dinastica che, tramite le unioni dei suoi figli e nipoti, assicurò una duratura influenza romana in aree chiave come la Tracia e il Bosforo Cimmerio. L’elogio che Strabone le dedica (“γυνὴ σώφρων καὶ δυνατὴ προΐστασθαι πραγμάτων”) è sintomo di una consapevolezza da parte del geografo della centralità politica delle donne di potere nei meccanismi di stabilizzazione regionale. Il ritratto di Pythodoris emerge così come un caso emblematico di leadership femminile nella storia politica dell’Oriente romano.
