Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the Ancient Greek sequence καὶ μάλα, especially its development into an affirmative answer to yes/no questions. The data have been drawn from the works by Xenophon of Athens, where καὶ μάλα is mainly used in three contexts: introducing concessive participles, introducing epitactic elements, and as an affirmative answer. The conclusion is that the last use is an offshoot of the second one.
