Abstract

The sets of glosses and commentaries transmited in medieval MSS often represent the culmination of consecutive and complex processes of fragmentation, reagrupation and/or reelaboration. Due to their instability, these collections are unique works and, therefore, they should be edited on the basis of one MS, leaving aside hypothetically restored texts on the basis of several MSS. This modus agendi does not exclude the possibility of looking at other MSS which have a content similar to the set of glosses to be edited. Moreover, in case in which some passages of the involved set are problematic or clearly defective, the use of this parallel testimonia is a necessity rather than a possibility. The analysis of the two editions of the Commentum Monacense hitherto published —those of F. Schlee and F. Schorsch— provides some specific examples in this regard.
