Abstract

Our aim in this paper is to analyze the main rhetorical devices which are used by the epitomists and the latin panegyrists of the fourth century in order to emphasize the effectiveness of rhetoric as an instrument of propaganda within different literary genres. Briefly, we intend to prove that historians and panegyrists contributed, albeit to an unequal extent, to shapen a certain image of the emperors and to transmit a specific ideology through their narrative art.
