Abstract

The i of the diphthongs oi, ai, ei contained in ancient personal and divinity names of the Iberian peninsula has been traditionally explained in the same way. However, the alternation seen in the couple ei / e is absent from the diphthongs oi and ai, due to the lack of variants with o and a, respectively. On the other hand, the dispersion of the forms ei / e delimites the phenomenon to Lusitany. At last, an explanation to the writing ei instead of etymological e is given: the phonetic close, especially in nasal contexts.
