Abstract

Barbarus was a concept that existed in a way parallel to the History of Rome. Taken of the Greek culture, in which it was born, the Romans, however, introduced certain novelties that made it more flexible: particularly about the renovation of the archetypical barbarian. Thus, from the Celt of the IV century B.C. to the Hun of the IV century A.D., we observe that paradigmatic barbarian practically represents the same threat for the Roman Empire, but is incarnated in different foreign peoples according to historical circumstances.
