Abstract
All cultures and ages have expressed wonder and joy or fear and uneasiness in the presence of prodigious events, whether positive or negative. The attitude of the ancient Greeks can be summed up by the concept inherent in the word θαῦμα which recurs in the narration and description of unusual facts and phenomena that are «seen» as extra-ordinary and yet are somehow referable to intelligible and natural causes.
