Abstract
This paper investigates πλήν (§ 1) and its use within the corpus of the greek novel (§ 2). To begin, the exceptive use (§ 3) is shown in archaic, classical and hellenistic ages, and then is analysed in the novels. (§ 4) examines the origin of the non exceptive πλήν and its types, and (§ 5) gives the dates of this use in the novels. In the summary and conclusions (§ 6) πλήν is classified both as a preposition and as a particle; in addition, its appearence within narrative and dialogue —as well as between male and female characters— is discussed.
