Abstract
The present paper examines the main procedures which St. Ambrose uses in the homily of his Hexameron dedicated to water animals. We focus on those developments which are original in contrast with his main model, St. Basil of Caesarea, especially the amplificationes of the characterizations of some animals. Examples of their survival in other Christian and Medieval writers are proposed. The variety of the public of his Lent sermon explains those digressions, often picturesque, as well as other more conceptual ones, in which Christian symbolism adopts the bases of the classical naturalists, from Aristotle to Pliny.
