Abstract

The paper discusses the requirements during the Principate advanced for being a local magistrate, based on the information provided by the writings of Roman jurists, particularly those known as late classical writers. Taking these requirements in Hispanic communities in the first century as its starting point, the fact of whether these remain valid or not is studied case by case. In the event that they continue being demanded, their possible evolution is explained.
