Abstract

The complete edition of the epigraphic manuscripts by Pirro Ligorio Neap. XIII B 7 and Neap. XIII B 8, including books 34-39 of the Antiquities of Rome, does not aim to offer a destination but a starting point for future Ligorian studies. With about one thousand pages of text, and almost 3000 drawings of inscriptions, this edition provides a wide range of research issues: the study of Ligorio's working method, his use of ancient sources and contemporary literature, the edition of the few unpublished epigraphic texts, but above all the analysis of the infinite variety in which fakes and forgeries appear in the works of Ligorio. The study of false inscriptions, in particular, shows how deep the need is for a new way of confronting this problem, with a modern research tool (an on line repository), allowing to store, organize and retrieve the hudge amount of information related to this complex aspect of the epigraphic production in ancient and modern times.
