Abstract
The new information and communication technologies (ICT) are able to increase the transparency of political, social and economic systems, as well as the transparency of mass media. Therefore, ICT can play an important role in democratic environments. However, in the author's opinion, this potential is not being exploited, and ICT value is still mainly measured according to financial criteria (profitability and productivity). This work describes this publicizing property of ICT and the impact of the digital revolution on two areas: the mass media and the financial world. These are two of the most affected areas by the digital revolution and they are tightly interconnected. We present here the analysis of one particular case, the coverage of the tax havens issue by the newspaper El Pais. This issue is a good example of the lack of transparency still persisting within the information society, in highly digitalized environments and in scenarios key to democratic health.
