Abstract

Nowadays, the use of analytic techniques to characterize biomolecules and materials in laboratories gives a high amount of information, but sometimes there are some results and effects that cannot be explained. For that reason, and in order to obtain this information, that is, to characterize molecules microstructures or determine contaminations, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption-Ionization/Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI/TOF-MS) technique is used. This mass spectrometry characterization technique has been spread in different fields because it allows the determination of the molar mass without fragmentation and, at the same time, using Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS) technique the spatial distribution in a tissue or material is obtained. In this work, the fundamentals and applications of this technique are going to be explained and analyzed.
