Abstract
Nature provides us with living beings with special characteristics, such as self-cleaning or antibacterial properties. In this work, the connection between surface topography and wetting phenomenon with properties like self-cleaning or bactericidal found in plants, like taro or lotus flower, and some animals will be explained. Regarding surface structures, hierarchical surfaces (micro- and nano-structures) and homogeneous surfaces (unitary structures) can be found, which will have an effect on surface characteristics. Finally, top-down and bottom-up approaches, which nowadays are used to imitate nature and create artificial rough surfaces, will be described.
