Abstract
The thermoresistant super-alloys used in the aeronautical industry imply many problems to machine them such as the premature and excessive wear of the cutting tools. Therefore, to enhance their performance the tool manufacturers are focusing on the influence of the cutting-edge geometry. Hence, in this article a study of three different parameters of the tool, the cutting-edge radius, rake angle and clearance angle, has been carried out to analyse their influence on the tool life. First of all, a design of experiment (DOE) has been done using a program of Finite Elements Method (FEM), to discuss which of those parameters have more influence. Then, some experimental tests have been carried out to validate the conclusions obtained by the FEM simulations. The results show that the cuttingedge radio has the major influence in the wear of the tool and, with the appropriate value; the tool life can be increased.
