Abstract
Radioembolization (RE) is a treatment for patients with liver cancer. RE consists of the infusion of radioactive microspheres in the hepatic artery using a microcatheter. Microspheres treat tumors by embolization and radiation. The trajectory of the microspheres can be analyzed using computational fluid dynamics simulations (CFD). The long duration of these calculations supposes a problem for their use in the clinical setting. To decrease the simulation time, blood, a non-Newtonian fluid, was considered as a Newtonian fluid. Results show that microsphere distribution and blood flow characteristics barely change when using a Newtonian fluid approach vs. a non-Newtonian fluid approach.
