Abstract

This paper describes the roller-rig or test bench for railway axles and bogies, designed and built in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is a 5" gauge test bench, having chosen this scale due to the ease of finding components of the same scale on the market. In this article, a comparative study of already existing axle, bogie and railway vehicles test benches located in laboratories, research centres, universities and in railway sector companies is carried out. The field of application of each of these test benches, performance and their limitations are explained. As a result of this comparative study, the characteristics and performance required for the present test bench have been selected. Finally, the project carried out is described, as well as the individual components chosen and their justification, combining price with the necessary features and performance.
