Abstract

The housing crisis and growing social concern about sustainability have increased the need to rehabilitate existing buildings, inCluding their structures. Reinforced concrete has been the predominant construction material used over the last century. Its state of conservation, together with current regulatory re quirements, frequently necessitates structural rehabilitation and strengthening. New strengthening systems for reinforced concrete structures continue to be investigated, although the limited properties of the original material are often not adequately considered. This article aims to review some of the main parameters that define the behaviour of concrete since the early patent-based systems, relate them to the properties observed in case studies in the Basque Country, and propose a definition of low-performance concrete.
