Abstract
This interview traces the development of the field of social studies on disasters in Latin America, a journey in which Virginia García-Acosta, professor emerita of anthropology at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS), played a leading role. Throughout the conversation, key elements of a perspective rooted in that region —one that understands disasters as historical and social processes— are explored while also addressing the conceptual dialogue between «crisis» and «disaster», the challenges facing public policies in this area, and the specificities of producing academic knowledge from the Global South.
