Abstract

The old documents written in Spanish by Basque speakers are often an important source of examination and retrieval of Basque words. This is the case of the around 350 letters that, between 1650 and 1659, the Biscayan Miguel Basterrechea (Auslesti) wrote to his brother-in-law José Beingolea (Lekeitio). In these letters, we have located about a hundred Basque terms that will be the aim of this work. In addition to some hapax legomenon, a third of the Basque names that Basterrechea includes in his letters are the first known testimonies of these Basque words.
