Euskal fonologiazko berriak 1900 arte

Abstract

In this paper a general account of the contribution of Bascologists up to 1900 is given from the point of view of phonology. Two main questions are addressed: on the first place, whether we can talk of phonology -in the broadest sense of the word- when referring to the treatises of older authors; second and starting out from the previous question, we try to measure the phonological depth and coherence of their reflections on sounds and some other related topics such a orthography, language apology, pronunciation, etc. Old grammars and introductions to books have been taken into account and passages directly quoted whenever possible in order to provide the reader with the most direct evidence used in the discussion.
