In this paper, our main purpose is to show the importance of watermark as an objective and alternative method in manuscript analysis, specifically with regard to providing new evidence for text dating. We analyse its meaning, use, and the different classifications proposed by the specialists.
In order to illustrate our claim, the method is applied to two undated texts: Manuel de Larramendi's Basque-Spanish Dictionary and an anonymous Basque sermon. The exam of the original manuscripts shows that watermark is a first-rate evidence in document dating, because it allows us to know what the rough date of the text is, as well as to know or confirm authorship and to verify if we are dealing with an original, a copy or even a forgery.
