Abstract

The study of delinquency and conflict in the seas of the late medieval Crown of Aragon often reveals three main issues: the relationship between the various institutions of power with the practice of maritime violence; the ambiguity of the use of the word pirate and piracy, and the association of piratical behaviors with the autochthonous patrons of the territories they attacked. The present article exemplifies this triple problem through the reconstruction of the maritime activities of one of the people closest to the monarch Alfonso the Magnanimous: Galcerán de Requesens.
