Abstract

Augustus's victory over the Cantabrians and Astures led to lasting peace for the territory of Hispania, which became part of the Empire after more than two centuries of Roman presence in the Iberian Peninsula. This new situation was contemporaneous with the establishment of the Principate and involved a series of changes that had a profound effect on the governance, administration and organization of the Iberian territories. The Roman Army was not exempt from this process, playing an important role, not only due to its military activities, but also due to the changes that would define its relationship with the provinces of Hispania during the High Empire. This article analyses the military presence in Hispania citerior during the Augustan age and deals with the main milestones in its formation, with a particular focus on the problems posed by its study.
