Abstract
Controlled use of fire constitutes one of the most significant technological advances in human evolution. Establishing the timing of such an important event in human evolution constitutes a complex, controversial task, as the relationship between the presence of fire and its anthropogenic nature is not clear-cut. Nevertheless, there is a significant number of combustion remains in the African and European archaeological record, which can help us to map out the progressive familiarization of the control used of fire during the Lower and Middle Pleistocene. This paper provides a compilation of the main Lower and Middle Palaeolithic sites with evidence of fire and brief discussion on their anthropogenic nature and on the concept of controlled use of fire.
