Abstract

The hypothesis that the framework of Paleolithic beliefs was fundamentally shamanic and that the art in the caves and shelters was made within that framework relies like all truly scientific hypotheses— upon bases and facts that ought to be clearly expressed and falsifiable. The methodology utilized must therefore be defined precisely, as well as what Shamanism really is and what —in our present state of knowledge— are the data from Paleolithic art and its context that contribute to make the shamanic hypothesis the best-fit hypothesis for the interpretation of the art.
