Abstract
The knowledge of the Lower Palaeolithic of Catalonia is still conditioned for the scarcity of sites with fauna and lithic industry in stratigraphic context. However, the intensification of the research over the past years allows us drawing a clearer panorama of this period. The most ancient occupations would be able to date from the end of the Lower Pleistocene and the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene, with Mode 1 lithic technology. Mode 2 appears in numerous sites, standing out the sites located in La Selva (Girona). This technical Mode not always is associated to the most characteristic Acheulean artefacts. The transition from Mode 2 to Mode 3 was gradual, and took place at the end of the Middle Pleistocene.
