Abstract

Valerius of Bierzo († 695) is one of the most important writers of Visigothic Spain. He is the author of a large literary production, and especially of three autobiographical works influenced by hagiography. Studies about Valerius have traditionally deduced from the data contained in these three works that his religious life began at the monastery of Complutum (El Bierzo, León). In this paper, we try to show that he may never have stayed at Complutum.
