Abstract

This paper tries to identify the phonological value of the Iberian signs r and ŕ, in order to do so it makes use of all the available evidence, including syntactic phonetics and linguistic typology. The conclusion is that ŕ is the more normal 'r', probably a flap, whereas for r there are two possible main explanations. The probability is that it was the retroflexed flap /ɽ/, hypothesis highly favored by linguistic typology. More problematic, but also with interesting points for, is Ballester's proposal that it was an uvular fricative /ʁ/.
