Abstract
In the 6th century A.D., a good deal of the western Mediterranean territories returned to be governed by the Empire, in this case, the Byzantine Empire. This paper aims at analyzing the Byzantine use of the epigraphy in these reconquered lands. The use of Latin is studied, likewise, as language used in the western oficial inscriptions. Also, by means of the study of some inscriptions from Italy, Africa and Hispania, we try to present the ideas that the emperors wished to transmit to their new imperial subjects: the return of these areas to the romanitas; the imperial defense of the territory; the eternity of the Empire.
