Abstract
The article analyzes two films by American filmmaker John Ford set during the American Civil War: The Horse Soldiers (1959) and the chapter entitled The Civil War in How the West Was Won (1962). In these films, the director combines history and myth around the recurring figure of General Ulysses S. Grant and develops the theme of the glory inherent in failure. Both films present the war as a cruel but necessary conflict to keep the nation united and advocate reconciliation and brotherhood among Americans in line with Grant's own philosophy.
