Abstract

This study describes a new test configuration, based on an End Notched Flexure test configuration. A metallic roller is inserted between the two arms of the crack in order to get aa mixed mode fracture. The external load application gives the mode II, and the opening of the crack is get by means of the inserted roller. Energy release rate is the parameter used for analyzing interlaminar fractura. Each mode energy release rate is determined analytically and the results are compared with the ones obtained by finite element method. Experimental tests are performed with specimens of F593/T300 carbon/epoxy unidirectional composite. The procedure to determine crack length is checked, energy release rate curves are determined and a failure criterion is validated. Moreover, the values of GIc and GIIc are determined.
