Abstract

ABSTRACT: The incidence of candidiasis caused by drug-resistant Candida isolates has increased, leading to higher mortality rates and treatment problems that require new therapeutic alternatives. One promising strategy is to combine antifungal drugs, such as fluconazole, with other compounds that do not show antifungal activity on their own in order to achieve synergistic effects. The aim of this work was to combine fluconazole with citral, cannabidiol and lactoferrin to study the antimicrobial activity against Candida species. Activity was assessed by the checkerboard method and interaction by calculating the fractional inhibitory concentration index. All compounds were able to reduce the minimum inhibitory concentration of fluconazole although there were differences between species. Synergistic effects were detected with citral and lactoferrin (in 2 and 3 isolates, respectively) and additive with cannabidiol and lactoferrin (in 2 and 1 isolate, respectively).
