Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic and common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures caused by imbalances in the brain's electrical activity. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of focal epilepsy. According to data, the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in TLE patients is higher than in patients with generalized epilepsy. The association between TLE and depression and anxiety has been described as bidirectional. In  the last two decades, neurologists and epileptologists have highlighted the importance of early identification and diagnosis of psychiatric comorbidities in TLE patients. Late diagnoses increases the severity of crisis disorders, leading to a significant deterioration in patients' quality of life. Currently, there is no consensus on the basic neuropsychological tests that should be performed on epileptic patients. For this reason, the results of different studies carried out by different centers are often not comparable. This literature review summarizes high-impact articles on the current state of LLE that have been published over the last 15 years and, specifically, analyzes the bidirectional relationship between LLE and mood disorders. In addition, the effect of antiepileptic drugs on mood disorders is analyzed. This work proposes the standardization of tests and instruments used to diagnose mood disorders in patients with LLE. Its objective is to standardize and unify neuropsychological assessments used in current clinical practice. This will facilitate the diagnostic process, and as a result, it is expected to improve the quality of life and overall prognosis of epileptic patients.
