Abstract
The article seeks to define and distinguish what are characterized as three major variants of heterosexual masculinity in Latin America —virility, handsomeness and machismo— in order to study the specific role of each of them in the social dynamics of masculinity in the region. Although masculinity has a great diversity of manifestations, certain profiles generally end up having a predominant analytical role. In order to analyze the situation of masculinity from a historical dynamic in Latin America, the article presents three main arguments. First, the need to recognize the ambiguity of the hegemonic role of virility. Second, the importance of the particular and durable role played by the handsome, especially among popular classes in terms of gender theatricalization. Third, the need to study machismo, the most widespread expression of masculinity, but normatively subordinated, in connection with the imaginary of ungovernable individualities. The analysis of these variants of heterosexual masculinity opens to a particular critical
history of the dynamics of the masculine in Latin America.
