Resumen
This paper bears witness to a hitherto unknown letter written by Manex Hiriart-Urruty to Anton Abadia. In addition to the fact that both men knew each other, this letter gives some insights into the thoughts and topics shared by the bascologists of the time. First of all, this letter gives a wealth of information about Ithurri’s grammar, such as Ithurri’s aims and Hiriart-Urruti’s interest in the project. Secondly, this letter is a direct testimony to the debates on the Basque ortography that toke place at the beginning of the 20th century. Besides revealing Manex Hiriart-Urruti’s opinion and criteria during this research of a suitable and unique ortographic system, it shows that the ortographic system adopted by the magazine Eskualduna was set by him. Lastly, this letter shows that Abadia was interested in Eskualduna and that he took part in it.
