Abstract

Against the hostility of most of the ancient authors and the lack of interest of many modern historians, the study of the Roman plebs in Republican Rome demands today a renewed approach. Besides well-known political and social aspects, different sources (poets, biographers, antiquarians), new perspectives about the city of Rome (with taberna as central element in the plebeian social life) and new subjects (spare time, orality, popular culture and religion) will help us gain new and deeper insight in this complex phenomenon.
