Abstract

This paper studies the treatment of mythology in Aristophanes' scholia. First, attention is paid to the role that mythology has in Aristophanes, since the annotators allude to that discipline to explain the comedies of the Athenian comedian. Next, the terminology used by the scholiasts to refer to mythical issues is studied and, then, attention is paid to the real value that the scholia contribute to the knowledge of mythology. Finally, the contexts in which mythological exegesis is brought together are described, paying attention to the rationalization of myths. The annotators feel comfortable explaining mythical issues within the parameters of a system in which the rational explanation of myth is well integrated.

Keywords: Myth; mythology; scholia; progymnasmata; Aristophanes.
