This article is a revision of the significance of the two characters which embody the misanthrope, in Menander and Molière respectively. It is based on the analysis of the various ways in which both poets use traditional techniques in order to shape comical types, and on a comparison of the results achieved by both dramatists as well as theis influence on subsequent remakes of the misanthropist.
