Abstract

Many towns are having popular initiatives related to “participatory processes”; this proposal wants to offer a ray of light in all of them. The basis of this process is Txopitea scholarship which is looking for the development of an artistic project. The process encouraged public participation in the creation and to share the results with the citizens. In the first step we explained to all citizens why Zarautz and how this Zarautz conditions us. From the drawings we changed to 3D; through conferences, workshops and dynamics we instructed the citizens and received their contributions. As a second step, we will imagine the future we will build. We will overcome the rational tools we have used up to now, jumping collectively to new dimensions. This proposal aims to build bridges between the architecture, as a creative work of the architects, and the citizens. The imagination and the poetry are more necessary than ever, to guide our desires to overcome the problems of everyday. Offering a look, artistic, poetic, at the public space where daily activities are developed, we act in a constructive manner into the public space. The final execution is looking forward to build the future Zarautz: first in scale, so we will get later to the real Zarautz. The formal result is a model such as city furniture. The base is a giant wooden pot, with the shape of Zarautz ground. Traditional carpentry techniques from shipyards that we missed in the town have been used. Model is filled with plants: flowers, grass, etc. As a metaphor of how the various species of plants, occupy the same place, helping and feeding each other, encouraging citizens to act in this way; because we live in Zarautz feeding among all. The final implementation of the model, according to previous designs, has been implemented with children; encouraging them to build actively the future. However, the implementation is not the end of the project; developing various dynamics and participation workshops will aim at diverse people, which is the goal of I’m also watering Zarautz campaign.
