Abstract
This article examines the perception of architectural space using artistic intervention as a mechanism to transform or to trigger the physical experience of being in a place. Through notions such as presence, materiality and emptiness, we try to describe and analyze the artworks, the architectural and natural environments and the objects that compose specific spatial situations. The idea that perception can be seen as action is a starting point that enables us to create a connection between the mind and the consciousness of movement, the awareness of occupying a space and belonging in a specific context that is culturally shared. The transposition of these conceptual understandings to the physicality of the streets, the body and the artwork is an exercise leading to a few important questions that help establish the boundaries of this investigation. The conceptual basis of the study is mainly centered in the phenomenology of architecture and the artistic concepts of installation, intervention and in-situ, put together in a common field of ideas that guide the discussion towards a contextual understanding of body, space and perception. In this context, the artistic interventions aim to occupy the perceptual gap that separates body and space, provoking discrete alterations in the tangible world in order to make it more ‘visible’ to the senses and more present in the wandering mind of the person walking down the street. Ultimately the study points to a poetic understanding of everyday life, in which the art interventions suggest the possibility of extracting meaning from the interaction of body, objects, shapes and images present in the concrete environment. The lines and materials found in facades and sidewalks are highlighted within a cultural context that organize the visual stimuli and influence our sensibility and our perception.
